Here's How You Can Avoid Sleeping At Work

Some situations are unavoidable in life. Falling asleep on office desk is one of them. Feeling sleepy at work is pretty normal and most of the people have experienced this. I also had this problem in my previous job but the actual problem grew when it started affecting my work.
If you are like me finding it difficult to control and are looking for a solution to avoid sleepiness at work then this article is for you. Read on to know further.

Modern advances led us to adopt sedentary lifestyle. This lifestyle may have turned beneficial to us but it cannot be denied that it does have negatively impacted our health. We are living inactive stressful life. We always think about the increasing competition and how can we always be ahead. In short, we all have made our life so much busy that we hardly get time to spend on ourselves. Do you think sedentary lifestyle has any connection with the drowsiness we feel at work?

To improve our productivity at work, it is always important to make sure that we are taking enough care of our health and letting it to take sufficient rest because when we give enough sleep to our body, it helps in keeping ourselves fresh and alert for daily activity.

Here are some tips that can help you in avoid getting sleepy at work.

1. Dull office environment

Studies shows that, office environment does contribute to drowsiness. If the environment is dull, dark and lifeless. It impacts our mind negatively and we find our task least interesting, difficult to do and boring. This leads to feeling drowsy. 

If this is the reason behind you feeling sleepy then, find ways to change your environment like adding bright colours to your work area, posting quotes, posters of successful people or shift your desk.  In short make your desk lively and interesting.

2. Munching

Studies shows that, when you keep your mouth working, it helps in keeping your mind alert. 
Always keep dry fruits with you. Munching whenever you feel sleepy will help you to avoid drowsiness. And munching dry fruits are beneficial to your health rather than munching wafers, snacks or unhealthy food items which can create adverse effects on your health.

3. Staring at computer screen for long time

In today’s world, maximum number of jobs are sedentary where you are expected to work for hours on computer or a laptop. By continuously staring at the computer, the light from the screen can cause more fatigue, both mental and visual. So look away from the screen and try this exercise to stop your mind from sleeping - Look at a faraway object and then at a nearer one, repeat. Do this very quickly.

4. Keep yourself moving

If your work demands you to sit for hours rather than moving. Chances are there that you will find yourself physically inactive and sometimes sitting all day long makes it difficult to keep yourself awake. So, get up regularly, stretch your body or walk around. This helps in improving blood circulation in the body. Involve yourself in some physical activity for some time. Try to get your interest back. When you get moving, your body releases endorphins which are neurotransmitters that help in relieving stress and fatigue and changing the mood for better and create alertness. 

5. Sufficient hours of sleep

If you are not getting a quality sleep, you will get sleep deprived and you will feel tired all day. For adults, appropriate sleep should be minimum 7 1/2  hours per night. To get sufficient sleep daily, follow routine of sleeping and waking up at the same time. Leave habit of setting multiple alarm and set one which will ring after you complete your sleep. Because waking yourself up in the middle of deep sleep can make feel tired when you wake up.
6. Exercise

Exercise helps in keeping our body active and alert for entire day. Exercises like cycling or running to work, or going to gym in the morning can help you in keeping your mood happier.
Studies suggest that, exercise helps in improving night sleep and there by raising your energy level and reducing depression, anxiety and keeping you active entire day.

7. Interacting with colleagues

Involve yourself in a conversation with your office mate or call your friends or relative who can help you to change your mood and make you feel fresh.
If not then watch funny videos on mobile. It will keep you interested and will offer a much needed break from your work. 

8. Keep yourself dehydrated

60% of the human body is water. Dehydration can cause fatigue and sleepiness. This can affect your daily routine. Water helps in regulating smooth functioning of human body. Try to keep yourself hydrated. Drink at least 8-ounce glasses or about 2 liters water each day.

9. Have Black Tea or Green Tea

Research has shown that drinking 3-4 cups of coffee increases blood pressure and heart rate. In short, excessive consumption of coffee has multiple side effects on our health. Instead try having black tea. Black tea is also effective in keeping you awake. Quantity of caffeine that tea powder has is lesser than that found i coffee and having black tea daily will let you avoid consuming calories that are found in milk tea and black tea is more effective in keeping your brain awake than milk tea. This makes black tea ideal to have if you want to keep your body alert. Green tea is also the healthiest beverage on the planet. It has antioxidants that creates positive effects on the body. 

10. Focus on healthy diet

According to nutritionist, our food diet plays an important role on how our body function.
Always eat food which is rich in protein and healthy fat. In breakfast, you can have eggs, avocado, peanut butter, curd, carrots and hummus. This foods are not only full of nutrients but also help you stay full and energetic for an entire day. 

Sleeping is bliss. Many leading companies like Google does provide facility for their employees to take a nap.  But not all companies are employee friendly. So, it's always better to consider yourself as priority. Try this above mentioned tips and if still the problem persist don't hesitate to take medical help.
